Villarrica Volcano Ascent: A Unique Experience in the Andes
Villarrica Volcano (2,847 metres), known as Rukapillán in Mapudungun, is located just 16 kilometres from Pucón and is one of Chile’s most active and iconic volcanoes.
Its ascent offers a unique experience in the Araucanía region, combining trekking, snow, nature and adventure. Throughout the excursion, you will be accompanied by Aguaventura’s professional and certified guides, who will guide you throughout the ascent and teach you the techniques needed to progress safely in the mountains.
As you make your way towards the summit, you will enjoy impressive views of Lake Villarrica, the Andes mountain range and the surrounding volcanoes. Once at the summit, weather and mountain conditions permitting, you will have the opportunity to see the active crater of Villarrica Volcano and enjoy one of the most spectacular panoramas in the region.
During the snowy season, the descent is made using traditional snow slides, one of the most fun and characteristic parts of this experience.
Villarrica Volcano Ascent Itinerary
The activity begins early in the morning at our office in Pucón, where you will meet your guide and receive the technical equipment required for the ascent.
We will then travel to the Villarrica Volcano Ski Centre, the starting point of the hike. The ascent is carried out progressively, with several breaks to rest, hydrate and enjoy the scenery.
Our guides will teach you the necessary snow and ice progression techniques according to the mountain conditions.
The ascent generally takes between 4 and 6 hours, depending on mountain conditions and the pace of the group. Once at the summit, we will take some time to enjoy the surroundings and take photographs before beginning the descent.
The complete activity lasts approximately 6 to 8 hours.

The ascent of Villarrica Volcano has an intermediate to challenging difficulty level and requires a good level of physical fitness.
Previous mountaineering experience is not required. However, participants should be prepared to walk uphill for several hours and follow the guide’s instructions.
